Summer Class Presents Black History 4 Young People

Beginning Summer of 2007, a six week Black History Class will be offered to young people, ages 12 - 16 years at View Park Preparatory High School, 3855 West Slauson, in Los Angeles.  Open to the public, the lively two hour class will be held on Saturday mornings from 10:00am to Noon.  Parent orientation will be held  also at View Park Prep. The instructor is Dr. Kwaku Person-Lynn, a professor at Loyola Marymount University, author and historian.

"Every time I teach my adult class "Afrikan World Civilizations" in the community, participants  ask if I will teach their young people.  For years, my students went away thinking that if the young people in their lives could know this information, maybe it would eliminate some of the violence so I made time to develop a course I know young people will lean on the rest of their lives," said Dr. Person-Lynnn.

The class will cover the Nile Valley, and the Afrikan origin of civilization, science, mathematics, medicine, engineering, technology, philosophy, writing and a host other disciplines Black people have created around the world. It will cover the Afrikan birth of humanity and look at the origin of colorism, intra-color prejudice, and how it is practiced today. The class will also look at the beginning of racism through the experience of the murder of 14 year old Emmet Till, and how what happened to a person of their age group effected generations of  American society,” said Dr. Person-Lynn.

Since rap/hip hop is the music of young people today, the origin and history of its development will also be investigated. The final session of the class will plant the seed of becoming financially independent through starting a business, investing and other tools towards becoming financially secure. It will be stressed that one does not go to school to get a job, but to create a job.

Conclusion of this class will give the students a sense of self-identity, and self-respect. They will learn that their ancestral family tree consisted of the founders of the civilization we presently enjoy, including the concept of education and the university system.

“We cannot continue to allow our children to be taught such myths as the ancient Egyptians were white or Columbus discovered America and other historical distortions,” said Dr. Person-Lynn. “Most of the material presented in the class is rarely, if ever, presented in the present educational system, from high school to the university. The class will give the young students a head start in being exposed to a history and culture often ostracized in western civilization.”
